Wimbledon 2021: Sania Mirza’s campaign in women’s doubles came to an end on Saturday as she and her American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands lost their second-round match in straight sets to Elena Vesnina and Veronika Kudermetova.

Star Indian player Sania Mirza and her American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands were knocked out in the women’s doubles second round at Wimbledon 2021 on Saturday. Sania and Mattek-Sands lost to Russian pairing of Elena Vesnina and Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets 4-6, 3-6.

Sania Mirza and Bethanie Mattek-Sands were comfortably outclassed in an hour and 28 minutes. The Indo-American pair got only a win percentage of 56 percent on first serve and it hurt them against the Russia duo.

Sania and Mattek-Sands were able to convert only one of the 7 break points they forced while they were broken twice in each of the two sets.

Sania’s campaign in women’s doubles is over but the Indian star will be in action with Rohan Bopanna in the mixed doubles. The senior Indian pair defeated Wimbledon debutants and compatriots Ramkumar Ramanathan and Ankita Raina in the opening round of women’s doubles after fending off a 2nd set fightback from the young pair.

Sania and Bopanna will take on the British pair of Emily Webley-Smith and Aidan McHugh in the 2nd round on Saturday.

India’s doubles pairing of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan were ousted in the first round of men’s doubles while Divij and his wife, Samantha Murray Sharan progressed to the second round in mixed doubles.
