Not picked for the Indian cricket team, seasoned leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal made his County debut for Kent on Monday. He made a solid first impression for his team as the leg-spinner bowled with immaculate control and got the ball to turn on a constant basis.

For Kent, their spin combination of Yuzvendra Chahal and Aron Nijjar, orchestrated a collapse at Canterbury as Nottinghamshire lost six wickets for a mere 46 runs. They were going about their business rather smoothly courtesy impressive half-centuries by Steven Mullaney and Joe Clarke. They were in a solid position chasing down Kent’s first-innings total of 446. However, the slide started at 160 for 2 when Nijjar dismissed Clarke. Nijjar and Chahal enjoyed a successful day, firmly placing the home team in control.

The Indian leg-spinner ended with 3 wickets for 52 runs in his spell as Kent bowled out Nottinghamshire for 219. Chahal was at his best when he got rid of Lyndon James with the perfect leg break. The ball was tossed up and it drifted towards middle and leg stump – James stretched forward to block the ball but was beaten by the turn as the ball dislodged his stumps.

Kent had previously secured the services of Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh earlier in the season. Arshdeep played five matches during June and July where he impressed with 13 wickets across eight innings. New Zealand’s Ben Lister is the other overseas player currently part of Kent’s roster.

Chahal, who has been a regular presence for India in white-ball cricket, has not featured in first-class cricket. He played a couple of matches in the last season of the Ranji Trophy for Haryana, his domestic team in India. In these matches, he picked up three wickets at an average of 92.33.

As far as his overall numbers are concerned, Chahal has picked up 87 wickets from 33 first-class matches. He has been a match-winner in limited overs cricket where he has picked up 121 wickets from 72 ODIs with an average of 27.13. Apart from this, he has also picked up 96 wickets from 80 T20Is with an economy rate of 8.19.
