Though he had to settle for a silver medal after losing to Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew in the summit clash at Huelva, Spain, his achievement was a historic one. The medal in the World Championships made sure that Srikanth ended the year on a high after what was a disappointing season, in which he had failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics too.
But at the World Championships he made history and for his historic silver medal at the BWF Worlds, Srikanth has been nominated in The Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA 2021) ‘Badminton Male Player of the Year’ category. The category winners, male and female, in the last edition of TOISA were PV Sindhu and Sai Praneeth.
The World Championships was the only final Srikanth played in 2021, while losing in the semi-final stages at the Indonesia Masters, Hylo Open and Swiss Open.
