Xiaomi India has refuted reports of the company moving base out of India to Pakistan amidst a crackdown on its operations by government agencies. A report from South Asia Index quoting sources had claimed that Xiaomi India has “almost halted” its operations in India after being targeted by the Indian government, adding that it may now move its operations to Pakistan after the Indian government froze its assets worth $676 millions.

Xiaomi responded to the tweet saying, “This tweet is completely false & baseless. Xiaomi entered India in 2014 & in less than a year, we embarked on our Make in India journey. 99% of our smartphones & 100% of our TVs are made in India. We’ll take all measures to protect our reputation from false & inaccurate claims.”

Xiaomi president Muralikrishnan B termed the tweet malicious and sought Twitter India’s support in removing the tweet and penalising “the perpetrators of this false and baseless thread of misleading information.”

Recently, Xiaomi Technology India Private Limited once again approached the Karnataka High Court. In a petition filed on October 3, the company has challenged the September 29, 2022 order of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) Competent Authority which confirmed the April 29 seizure order of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED had earlier this year ordered the seizure of Rs 5,551.27 crore in the accounts of Xiaomi for allegedly violating FEMA rules and transferring money in the guise of royalty to three companies outside India. The company had approached the HC earlier this year against this order. The HC had, however, ordered it to approach the Competent Authority under FEMA.
