“Over time we’ve found more and more people are looking to have treatments that only make them feel good, but that also have a health aspect to them as well. A medical pedicure ticks both of those boxes. Usually, the people we see are already experiencing some slight pain or discomfort and so are wanting to get on top of it a lot earlier,” Biedak says.
“One of the things that COVID did was highlight the need to maintain good health – whether it be physical or mental. There seems to be a much greater focus on … being proactive about how we care for our bodies.”
“There’s a lot of foot shame out there. Most people don’t really see other people’s feet very often so everybody thinks there’s something wrong with theirs.”
For Blonde Tiger Pedicures founder Erin Margarethe, who is a licensed nail technician specialising in clinical pedicures, her service is as much about offering long-term education to clients as it is about making feet look and feel good.
“There’s a lot of foot shame out there. Most people don’t really see other people’s feet very often so everybody thinks there’s something wrong with theirs, but most of the time it’s perfectly normal,” she says.
“Part of what I do is find out how a person uses their feet, come up with a treatment plan, and then we proceed from there. That can be giving advice on a good foot cream to use, or referring a client to a podiatrist if it’s something more serious.”
Both Biedak and Margarethe say the colder months are the perfect time to get your feet in check before sandal season hits.
“Winter is a great time to start looking after our feet and to get on top of those common issues like cracked heels, dry skin, fungal infections or ingrown toenails,” Biedak says.
Margrethe recommends investing in natural fibre socks to avoid unnecessary sweating and bacterial growth, a good foot balm with a high urea content and washing your feet every day in the shower.
“A lot of people just let the soap run down from their arms and legs, but you should try to get in there and give your feet some proper attention every day,” she says.
