Tecno Phantom V Fold first impressions: a familiar first for the brand
Tecno officially entered the foldable smartphone segment this week after unveiling the Tecno Phantom V Fold at MWC 2023. This is Tecno’s first foldable phone and the brand seems to have taken inspiration from Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. The Tecno Phantom V Fold has a book-style design, with a large edge-to-edge display on the cover and an even bigger, tablet-sized flexible display when unfolded. While the highlight is clearly its foldable design, the Tecno Phantom V Fold also touts top-notch hardware under the hood.
I managed to get some hands-on time with the Tecno Phantom V Fold at the company’s booth at MWC 2023, and here are some quick thoughts.
Hands-on with the Tecno Phantom V Fold
As you can see from the photos, the Tecno Phantom V Fold looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, Honor Vs, OPPO Find N2, and so on. In its default state, the device offers a vertical display with a 1080×2550 resolution and noticeable bezels around the sides. The screen supports up to 120Hz refresh rate. Unfolding the device reveals a large, square-shaped flexible screen that turns the device into a mini tablet.
The hinge mechanism of the Tecno Phantom V Fold is comparable to that of Samsung’s foldable device, providing a satisfying snap when closed. However, the crease in the middle is noticeable, and it remains to be seen how the phone will hold up after multiple folds. The Tecno Phantom V Fold comes with a tried and tested design. Tecno seems to have played it safe here, which isn’t a bad way to go for your debut foldable. The device doesn’t feel as refined as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold4. It’s worth noting, however, that the Galaxy Z Fold had four iterations to reach its current level of sophistication.
The rear panel of the Tecno Phantom V Fold has a faux leather feel to it, giving it a premium look while ensuring you get a good grip to unfold the device. A large circular camera module takes up the top half of the panel. It houses a 50MP triple camera system. Meanwhile, there are two punch-hole selfie cameras, one on the cover display and one on the flexible screen.
Under the hood, the Tecno Phantom V Fold is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ chipset paired with 12GB RAM (with support for RAM expansion up to 9GB) and 512GB of internal storage. Other key specifications of the Tecno Phantom V Fold include a 5,000mAh battery, Android 13 out-of-the-box, and a Type-C port.
Tecno Phantom V Fold’s price in India
Tecno announced the India price of the Phantom V Fold on Tuesday at MWC 2023. The phone starts from Rs 89,999, with an early bird offer of Rs 79,999. The foldable phone will go on sale in the country this quarter. Tecno also confirmed to 91mobiles at MWC 2023 that it plans to bring the MEGABOOK-S1 and MEGABOOK-T1 laptops in the coming months.
