Indore: Super Speciality Hospital has become the first government hospital in Malwa-Nimar region to start open heart surgery by successfully performing two valve replacement surgeries this week.
Two valve replacement surgeries were performed for PMJAY-Ayushman beneficiaries on Tuesday and Wednesday. Confirming the surgeries, cardiologist professor Dr AD Bhatnagar said, “We have performed two valve replacement surgeries this week in adults through open heart mode. The team has scheduled to further carry out bypass surgeries next week in two patients.”
The two patients with blockage in veins and a big hole in their hearts are scheduled for open heart bypass surgery in hospital next week, officials said.
The surgeries can be performed as hospital got a heart-lung machine and other equipment. The hospital was waiting for those machines for months to start the surgeries. The equipment worth Rs 54 lakh, including Rs 20 lakh apparatus for upgrading operation theatre to start open heart bypass surgery, was ordered in January. MGMMC dean Dr Sanjay Dixit said, “The starting of open heart bypass surgery in Super Speciality Hospital will be a boon for patients as it would remain available at low cost. It is expected to provide at less than half the price in other big private hospitals.”
In the state, Government Medical College, Bhopal, NSB Medical College, Jabalpur and GMC, Rewa are three government medical colleges performing open heart surgery. In Jabalpur and Rewa, it started a couple of years ago.
The setting up of a facility for open heart surgery would be a boon for patients as the district has witnessed a sharp rise in cardiovascular cases during Covid-19 pandemic. The heart attack cases reported at government facilities in the district almost doubled to 3235 in 2021-22 from 1716 in 2019-20, show records.
