We have had 42 completed matches in IPL 2023 so far, till the afternoon of May 1. For the first time in IPL history the match runs aggregate has breached the 400 run mark as many as 10 times.
That though is not the only mind boggling statistic that IPL 2023 has thrown up.

# For the first time in the history of the IPL, 800-plus runs were scored in one day, comprising two matches – Chennai 200/4 & Punjab 201/6 at Chepauk, Chennai and Rajasthan 212/7 & Mumbai Indians 214/4 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai – both contested on April 30.
# Also, for the first time, four totals of 200-plus have been recorded in a single day’s play and both the matches resulted in wins for the chasing sides.
# Nine matches in this edition have witnessed totals of 200-plus from both the teams in the same match – an all-time record in the IPL, outstripping the five in 2022.
# Ten times in this edition, a match aggregate of 400-plus has been witnessed – another first in the history of the IPL.
# Interestingly, the top four match-aggregates in this edition have witnessed eight different teams. 458 for 15 between Punjab Kings & Super Giants at Mohali on April 28; 444 for 14 between RCB & Super Kings at Bengaluru on April 17; 433 for 11 between KKR & Sunrisers at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 14 and 426 for 11 between Rajasthan Royals & Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 30.
# The match aggregate of 458 for the loss of 15 wickets between Lucknow Super Giants (257/5) and Punjab Kings (201) is the third highest in the IPL – the highest being 469 for the loss of ten wickets between Chennai Super Kings (246/5) and Rajasthan Royals (223/5) at Chennai on April 3, 2010.
# Mumbai Indians’s 214 for four vs Rajasthan Royals on April 30 has provided the first instance of a team chasing a total of 200-plus at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
# Lucknow Super Giants (257/5 vs Punjab Kings at Mohali on April 28, 2023) have become the second team to produce a total of 250-plus in the IPL – the first being Royal Challengers Bangalore – 263 for five vs Pune Warriors at Bengaluru on April 23, 2013.
# Twenty four totals of 200-plus have been recorded in this IPL, setting an IPL record, outstripping the 18 in 2022.
# Lucknow’s aforementioned total is now the highest score without an individual century in the IPL.
# Faf du Plessis has taken 317 innings to complete his 9000 runs in Twenty20 – the ninth quickest in this format. The three quickest being Babar Azam (245 innings), Chris Gayle (249) and Virat Kohli (271).
# Nine bowlers were used by Lucknow Super Giants in Punjab Kings’ innings at Mohali on April 28, emulating an IPL record. RCB was the first team to use nine bowlers in an IPL innings – vs Gujarat Lions at Bengaluru on May 14, 2016.
# Sixteen bowlers were utilised in the Lucknow Super Giants (nine) vs Punjab Kings’ (seven) match at Mohali on April 28, emulating an IPL record. Sixteen bowlers were used in the RCB vs Gujarat Lions match at Bengaluru on May 14, 2016.
# Forty one boundaries (27 fours & 14 sixes) were hit in Lucknow’s innings – the second highest tally in the IPL behind the 42 (21 fours & 21 sixes) for RCB vs Pune Warriors at Bengaluru on April 23, 2013.
# Sixty seven boundaries – Lucknow (41) and Punjab (26) – were hit at Mohali on April 28. Only once more boundaries were recorded in an IPL match – 69 between Chennai (36) and Rajasthan (33) at Chepauk, Chennai on April 3, 2010.
# Twenty seven sixes have been hit by RCB’s Faf du Plessis – the most by a batter in this IPL, followed by RCB’s Glenn Maxwell (23), CSK’s Shivam Dube (21) & LSG’s Kyle Mayers (20).
# The three batters to have amassed 400-plus runs in this IPL are – Yashasvi Jaiswal (428), Faf du Plessis (422) & Devon Conway (414).
# Two bowlers with 15 or more wickets in this IPL are – Tushar Deshpande (17) & Arshdeep Singh.
# Arjun Tendulkar conceded 31 runs in an over vs Punjab at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April – the second most conceded by a Mumbai Bowler behind the 35 by Daniel Sams during his figures of 3-0-50-1 vs KKR at Pune on April 6, 2022.
# Rohit Sharma, during the course of his 44 off 27 balls, vs Punjab at Wankhede Stadium on April 22, hit three sixes and became the first Indian batter to complete 250 sixes in the IPL.
# Virat Kohli, with Devdutt Paddikal’s catch, became the third fielder to complete a century of catches in the IPL, accomplishing the feat vs Rajasthan Royals at Bengaluru on April 30. With Yashasvi Jaiswal’s catch, he took his tally to 101 after Suresh Raina (109) and Kieron Pollard (103).
# Suryakumar Yadav, during the course of his splendid innings of 57 off 26 balls against Punjab at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 22, has established an Indian record for the quickest to 6,000 runs in terms of balls (4017) in Twenty20. Overall, he is the fifth quickest behind Andre Russell (3550), Glenn Maxwell (3890), Kieron Pollard (3918) and Chris Gayle (4008).
# In Punjab’s innings of 214 for eight against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 22, 82 runs were scored – 13 in the 15th over, 31 in the 16th, 13 in the 17th & 25 in the 18th – the joint-most in the overs between 15 and 18 in the IPL.
# Virat Kohli has earned the dubious distinction of being dismissed off the first ball of a match for the second time in the IPL – vs Rajasthan Royals at Bengaluru on April 23 – his previous instance being against Sunrisers at Wankhede Stadium on May 8, 2022. He joined Brendon McCullum, Jacques Kallis, Parthiv Patel & Mayank Aggarwal, who had previously got out twice off the first ball of the match.
# Mitchell Marsh (63 + 4/27 vs Sunrisers at Delhi on April 29) has become the fifth all-rounder to post a fifty and bag four-wicket haul in the same IPL match. He has joined Yuvraj Singh (twice), Jean-Paul Duminy, Kieron Pollard and Paul Valthaty, who had previously accomplished the double. Jean-Paul Duminy had achieved the feat for Delhi
vs Sunrisers at Visakhapatnam on April 18, 2015 – 54 & 4/17.
# Marsh has become just the second all-rounder to register a fifty and produce a four-wicket haul in a losing cause in an IPL match. Yuvraj’s both instances went in vain – 83 & 4 for 35 for RCB vs Rajasthan at Bengaluru on May 11, 2014 and 66 & 4 for 29 vs vs Delhi at DYP, Mumbai on April 17, 2011.
# Of the four fifties registered in the power play this season, two have been recorded by Kyle Mayers. He recorded a 20-ball fifty vs Punjab at Mohali on April 28 and a 21-ball fifty vs Chennai at Chennai on April 3.
# Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell have become the first pair to share century stands in three consecutive IPL innings at a venue – at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru – 115 for the second wicket vs LSG, 126 for the third wicket vs CSK and 127 for the third wicket vs Rajasthan Royals.
# The only pair to manage 500 runs or more in this IPL is Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis – their tally being 504, including two century stands and a fifty-plus in eight innings, at an average of 63.00.
# The top five partnerships in this IPL belong to RCB and the only batter to figure in all five is Faf du Plessis – three with Maxwell and two with Kohli.
# Punjab Kings were 105 for four after 14 overs, adding 109 in the last six overs, thanks to ten sixes, taking their total to 214 for eight against Mumbai Indians at Mohali on April 22. Just once have more runs been scored by a team in the last six overs – 126 by Royal Challengers Bangalore, including fifteen sixes, vs Gujarat Lions at
Bengaluru on May 14, 2016.
# Sam Curran (four sixes), Harpreet Singh (two sixes), Jitesh Sharma (four sixes) and Harpreet Brar were the batters, who made it possible with their impressive strike rate during the last six overs in the aforesaid match.
# Trent Boult became the first New Zealand bowler to complete 100 wickets in the IPL.
# After a gap of seven years, Ajinkya Rahane was adjudged the Man of the Match in the IPL for playing an outstanding knock of 71 not out off 29 balls for CSK vs KKR at Kolkata on April 23. His last award was for scoring 63 not out off 48 balls for Rising Pune Supergiants vs Delhi Daredevils at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on May 5, 2016.
# Devon Conway has recorded eight fifties to become the first Chennai batter to post eight fifties in the first sixteen innings in the IPL. Just one other batter has accomplished the feat in the history of the IPL – Punjab’s Shaun Marsh – a hundred and seven fifties.
# Akash Singh conceded 32 runs – 14 in the first over followed by 18 in the second over – vs Rajasthan at Jaipur on April 27 to become the second Chennai bowler to concede 32 runs in the first two overs of an IPL match. # Tim David registered a strike rate of 321.42 during the course of his match-winning unbeaten 45 off 14 balls – the highest by a Mumbai batter in this IPL. His innings was embellished with two fours and five sixes.
# Ravichandran Ashwin has become the second Indian bowler after Yuzvendra Chahal to complete 300 wickets in Twenty20 cricket.
# Yashasvi Jaiswal (124) has posted his maiden hundred in the IPL/Twenty20, obliterating the 77 vs Chennai Super Kings at Jaipur on April 27, 2023. He has emulated Jos Buttler’s score of 124 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 2, 2021.
# Jaiswal has become the third batter to post a hundred as well as the highest individual score in this IPL – the first two being Harry Brook – 100 not out vs KKR at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 14 and 104 by Venkatesh Iyer vs Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 16.
# Jaiswal, at the age of 21 years 123 days, has become the youngest batter to post a century for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL – the fourth youngest overall in the IPL.
# Jaiswal’s innings is the highest scores by an uncapped player in the IPL, bettering Paul Valthaty’s 120 not out for Punjab vs CSK at Mohali on April 13, 2011
# There was a difference of 106 between the top two scorers – Jaiswal (124) & Buttler (18) – in Rajasthan’s innings – the joint-third highest in the history of the IPL. The highest remains 142 when Chris Gayle had posted 175 not out while the next highest scorer, Tillakaratne Dilshan got out for 33 – for RCB vs Pune Warriors at Bengaluru on
April 23, 2013.
# Devon Conway (94 not out vs Punjab at Chennai on April 30) has recorded his highest IPL score, obliterating the 87 vs Delhi Capitals at DYP, Mumbai on May 8, 2022. He is the third batter after Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli to hit five fifties in this IPL.
# During the course of his above innings, Conway, playing in his 144th innings, raced to 5,000 runs in Twenty20 – the joint-third quickest to this milestone behind Chris Gayle (132) & Lokesh Rahul (143). Shaun Marsh took 144 innings and Babar Azam (145).
# Conway’s average of 44.41 is the highest among the batters with 5,000 runs or more in Twenty20, outstripping the 44.02 by Babar Azam.
# Conway has become the fifth player to receive the Man of the Match award twice in this IPL, the other four being Ravindra Jadeja, Mohit Sharma, Marcus Stoinis and Yashasvi

# Chennai Super Kings have recorded 27 scores of 200-plus, extending their IPL record while Punjab Kings became the first team to concede 200-plus scores 25
times.
# Mahendra Singh Dhoni has recorded two sixes off the last two balls of the 20th over for the fifth time, setting an IPL record.
