Spider-Man: No Way Home has collected 32.67 crore on its opening day in India. The Tom Holland-starrer has not only beaten Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi’s opening box office collection of 26.29 crore to record the biggest opener of the year but also recorded the biggest opening day collection for a Hollywood film since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, in India.

The film, backed by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, stars Tom Holland in the lead. It also features Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “Thursday, non-holiday release, 50% capacity in Maharashtra (and) Pandemic era, yet, #SpiderMan takes a FANTABULOUS START from East to West, from North to South… MONSTROUS Day 1… Thu 32.67 cr Nett BOC… Gross BOC: 41.50 cr. #India biz. All versions. #SpiderManNoWayHome.”

According to Box Office India, Spider-Man: No Way Home performed well at the multiplexes. “All India, it is the third best opening post pandemic after Vakeel Saab (Telugu) and Master (Tamil) but there will be huge difference post day one between these South films and Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the report stated.

However, the report said that the film has still performed below expectations. “Going by the numbers in South, this film should have have done 42-43 crore nett but performance in Hindi circuits is generally less than Infinity War while South is just 20% less than Endgame which did 53 crore nett on day one,” the report added.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was the third Marvel superhero movie to release in India this year. Marvel Studios released Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings and Eternals. While Shang-Chi collected 3.25 crore, Eternals opened to 8.75 crore, trade analyst Taran Adarsh had tweeted.

The third Spider-Man movie, starring Tom in the lead, has opened to mostly positive reviews. The Hindustan Times review reads: “The largely satisfying and briefly exhilarating triumph of No Way Home lies not in the storytelling as much as it does in getting actors and characters from previous Spidey movies to return. The appeal here is the thrilling novelty factor of what happens, not why or how it happens.”
