KOLKATA: Shreyas Iyer must have felt a bit awkward raising the bat on reaching his half-century at an almost empty Eden Gardens. On Thursday, the Kolkata Knight Riders skipper was in a different colour and role at his IPL home ground. But that didn’t stop him from producing his best as his breezy 73 off 44 balls helped Mumbai beat Vidarbha by five wickets and make their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali (T20) Trophy final.
On Saturday, they will be up against Himachal Pradesh, who too have made the summit clash in this tournament for the first time.
Vidarbha perhaps lost the plot when they managed 164 for seven after choosing to have the first go on a good batting wicket, which was not enough against a batting
powerhouse like Mumbai. They did strike early by removing skipper Ajinkya Rahane, but Prithvi Shaw provided a solid start with his 21-ball 34-run innings.
Even Iyer, who capitalised on that start, acknowledged Shaw’s contribution.
“Prithvi gave us the start that shifted the momentum in our favour,” he stated while describing his own knock as “personally a satisfying innings.”
