MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The St. Andrews football team was defeated by St. Thomas University on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 62-20. With the loss, the Knights now drop to 0-3 on the year, while the Bobcats improve to 4-0.
After a quick first possession, the Knights would give up an 88-yard punt return touchdown to the Bobcats which made the score 7-0 with two minutes elapsed in the first quarter.
On the next possession, St. Andrews would capitalize on a fumble by St. Thomas that was recovered by the Knights on the Bobcats 21 yard line. The combination of Trevor McNeil (SR/Charleston, S.C.) and Abdelaziz Junior Ellis helped power the Knights on the ground into the red zone where the drive ended with a one-yard rushing touchdown by Austin Wallace (SO/Royal Palm, Fla.).
With 3:41 left in the first quarter, the Bobcats broke the tie on a drive that went 10 plays for 73 yards.
With time winding down in the opening quarter St. Andrews found themselves with a prime field position at the start of the second quarter. The Knights would go on to score on a seven-yard rush by Juwan Lyons (SO/Kernersville, N.C.) who tied the game up with 14:46 left in the first half.
St. Thomas immediately responded and scored 20 unanswered points as both teams went into the intermission with a 34-14 Bobcat lead.
The Knights struggled the rest of the way, scoring their last points of the game on their final drive of the day on a one-yard rush by Ronald Mackey (SO/Greer, S.C.).
Wallace finished the day completing 7 of 17 pass attempts for 56 yards and one interception. Tre Craig Gooding (FR/Richlands, N.C.) made his first appearance of the season completing both of his pass attempts for 80 yards.
Ellis led the way for St. Andrews as he rushed for 61 yards on 8 attempts. McNeil added 25 yards on 6 carries.
Defensively, Ronald Coleman finished with six tackles, while Micah Cokley (SO/Norfolk, Va.) added five tackles. Jaylen McFadden (JR/Chester, S.C.) and Maddox Spires (FR/Catawba, N.C.) each registered a tackle for loss.
St. Andrews will continue to look for their first win of the season as they prepare for their week 4 opponent No.1 Lindsey Wilson on Saturday, Sept. 25. Kick-off between the Knights and the Blue Raiders is set for 1:00 pm in Laurinburg.
