“We are inspired by the work that these students have done,” said Harmony Magnet principal Jeff Brown. “Without the partnership of Setton Farms, this would not have been possible. We are truly grateful for their generous support in advancing our ‘Creating Opportunities and Changing Lives’ mission.”

Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc., the nation’s second-largest pistachio grower and processor, is proud to announce the recipients of their first annual Earth Day scholarship contest. This initiative was created as part of the Setton family’s ongoing commitment to helping students reach their educational goals, and to spread awareness about the importance of sustainability. As leaders in the effort to reduce waste, reuse resources, and recharge the land, Setton partnered with Harmony Magnet Academy in Porterville, California to award $5,000, $2,500, and $1,000 Earth Day scholarships to three exemplary high school seniors. Students were asked to create a project focused on sustainability in California’s Central Valley and were given Setton Farms pistachios to use as part of their entry. They submitted paintings, sculptures, and animations with a video or essay showing how their work best demonstrates the importance of sustainability.

The 2023 recipients whose outstanding work earned them Setton’s first, second, and third place scholarships are John Cemo, Kasandra Baez, and Kayla Gutierrez. Additionally, nine other students received an honorable mention award of $250.

“We are inspired by the work that these students have done,” said Harmony Magnet principal Jeff Brown. “Without the partnership of Setton Farms, this would not have been possible. We are truly grateful for their generous support in advancing our ‘Creating Opportunities and Changing Lives’ mission.”

Submissions were judged on originality, creativity, and how well they incorporated the topic of sustainability into their project. The judging panel was comprised of Setton executives, pistachio growers, and a representative from the school. Winners were honored at an awards luncheon at the school on Wednesday, April 19.

“We are so inspired by and grateful for the members of our amazing community,” said Setton Farms COO Mia Cohen. “In return, our goal is to support students in their pursuit of a college education, and our hope is that this scholarship contest will bring sustainability awareness to the future leaders of our community.”

Setton launched its Education Program in 2016 and has awarded over 22 scholarships to employees, local community members and students worth over $120,000. For more information on available programs and Setton’s ongoing mission, please contact Candace Moody at (559) 535-6050.
