Sakshi Malik, Sangeeta Phogat out of Asiad reckoning after skipping trials | More sports News – Times of India
The development meant Antim Panghal, fellow wrestler in Vinesh’s women’s freestyle 53kg category, qualified as her ‘standby’ for the Asiad by winning the trial.
If Vinesh decides to pull out of the Asiad, Antim will represent the country .
The trials to select the wrestling contingent for the Games in women’s and greco-roman categories was conducted by Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) adhoc committee, which has been tasked to run the day-to-day affairs of the federation.
The trials to select the men’s freestyle team will take place on Sunday, following which the IOA will forward the final entries ‘by name’ of Indian wrestlers to the organising committee of the Asiad.
In Bajrang’s men’s 65kg division, the winner of the trial will be his standby.
In the women’s section trials, two upsets were witnessed in the 57kg category when World Championships medallists, Anshu Malik and Sarita Mor, were eliminated, losing their respective bouts. Anshu lost 4-6 to Mor in the first round before the latter was humbled by Mansi 9-6 in the next round.
Two other leading faces of the protest against former wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Singh, Sakshi Malik and Sangeeta Phogat, didn’t appear in the trials, which meant they were out of the reckoning for the Games. They were not offered exemptions.
