ACL, MCL tears operated on; ODI World Cup is new return target for ’keeper
NEW DELHI: India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant underwent surgery on his knee on Friday evening, a week after surviving a car accident on a highway in Uttarakhand. TOI has learnt that the 25-year-old suffered two tears on his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL).
The ACL crosses in the middle of the knee and connects the thighbone to the shinbone and helps stabilize the knee joint. The MCL runs from the inside surface of the upper shin bone to the inner surface of the bottom thigh bone.
Pant was operated on by Indian cricket board’s (BCCI) Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. His progress and rehab will be monitored by Pardiwala.
While airlifting him from Dehradun to Mumbai, the BCCI had mentioned that Pant had suffered ligament tears but didn’t specify the extent of the injury. Sources said Pant’s return to match fitness could take more than four months now.
“He already had a niggle on his right knee. He was supposed to be at the NCA this week for strengthening sessions. But the torn ACL and MCL pose a difficult road to recovery for Pant.
“Had it been just the ACL, one could have thought of relatively quick recovery. But the MCL tear could hamper his plans. Being a wicketkeeper, role of the MCL becomes all the more important since he has to crouch and move sideways all day,” a source said.
“As of now, Pant’s primary focus is to get fit in time for the ODI World Cup in India in October-November. That will give him enough time to go through an extensive rehabilitation programme, play some matches and test himself out. The ligaments may heal within three-four months. But he will take time to get back to absolute match fitness,” the source added.
BCCI didn’t want to delay the surgery as he had developed significant swelling in his knee. The swelling on his face and back hadn’t subsided in Dehradun. The BCCI felt it was imperative to get this surgery done in Mumbai, keeping Pant’s career in mind.
