With the Tokyo Olympics done and dusted and focus already shifting towards 2024 Paris Olympics, junior Indian archers will be looking to make their mark at World Archery Youth Championship to be held in Wroclaw, Poland, from Tuesday.
The event, which was supposed to take place in Australia but was shifted to Poland because of the pandemic, will see as many as 24 archers from the country take part along with more than 500 archers from 57 other countries.
Speaking of the team’s preparation ahead of the event, India coach Purnima Mahato said, “The players have been training hard and all of them are expected to do well.”
Although she doesn’t want to burden the youngsters, Mahato has high hopes from the junior recurve men’s team comprising Parth Salunkhe, Aditya Choudhary and Dhiraj Bommadevara. Of the three, Parth and Aditya have also made the cut for Archery World Championships to be held next month.
Another archer to make cut for both the events is Jharkhand’s Komalika Bari. She won gold in the cadet category when the event was held in Madrid in 2019 and will now be taking part in the junior category.
She also won two gold in the recurve women’s team event in Archery World Cup in Guatemala and then in Paris but failed to make the cut for Tokyo Olympics and that hurt her badly. All that she now wants is to qualify for Paris Olympics which is only three years away.
“Winning gold was great but missing out on the Olympics was heart-breaking,” she said. “60% of my technique is good but I will have to work on the remaining 40%. Also, I have to make sure that I don’t make the same mistakes again.”
The Jharkhand archer is also working on her mental strength to be well prepared for the big events. “The Psychologist gives me tasks and I complete them every day. Then I try to implement them whenever I am competing,” said Bari.
While the Indian archers were expected to do well in Tokyo, they failed to bring any medal with disappointing show. Focus will now naturally shift towards the youngsters as to how they keep performing leading up to the next Olympics.
