Punjab Assembly elections to be held in one phase on February 14

Voting in the Punjab assembly election will be held in a single phase on February 14, the Election Commission announced today.

The results will be out, along with those of other states, on March 10, the EC said.

In 2017, elections to the Punjab legislative assembly were held in a single phase on February 4 to elect 117 members. The Congress led by Captain Amarinder Singh won 77 seats, an alliance of the Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP won 18 and the Aam Aadmi Party won 20.

But things have got much more complicated over the past five years. First, Shiromani Akali Dal severed its two-decade old alliance with the BJP over the contentious farm bills which was opposed by a huge number of farmers in the state. It then went ahead and tied up with Mayawati’s BSP.

Then, when the sailing looked right for the Congress, the infighting between Captain Singh and state Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu took an ugly turn, Singh was forced to step down as CM, and he left the party in a huff.

Congress then appointed Charanjit Singh Channi as the CM with an eye on Dalit Singh votes, Amarinder Singh floated his Punjab Lok Congress and allied with the BJP.

As of now these are the parties in the fray: Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Shiromani Akali Dal-BSP alliance and the BJP-Punjab Lok Congress-SAD(Sanyukt) alliance.
