Openai: OpenAI CTO’s Twitter account posts phishing link after getting hacked – Times of India
The Twitter account of the chief technology officer (CTO) of artificial intelligence (AI) research startup OpenAI Mira Murati has reportedly been hacked. The crypto community on the Elon Musk-led microblogging site was flooded with warnings from users as Murati’s account started promoting a “scam” cryptocurrency airdrop, after being hacked. The account tweeted what appeared to be a phishing link promising an airdrop on June 2. The link seemed to promote the ERC-20 token OpenAI, which is named after the Microsoft-backed firm that created the generative AI chatbot ChatGPT.
Murati’s verified Twitter account has more than 1.2 lakh followers on the platform. According to a report by Cointelegraph, the post promoting the link was live for an hour before it was deleted. The post was also viewed 79,600 times and retweeted 83 times. Moreover, the tweet’s author also restricted who could reply to the tweet. This restriction also stopped users from warning others about the scam link. Several Twitter users have reported about Murati’s account getting hacked.

How Murati’s Twitter account got hacked
Some Twitter users have also suggested that Murati became a victim of a SIM-swapping attack.
As per the report, the website shared in the tweet seemed “sophisticated” and its layout design seemed copied from a real project called ChainGPT. However, the fake site reportedly had a few slight tweaks, especially in its prompt to connect a crypto wallet.
A security researcher from blockchain security firm Beosin noted that the fake site uses an available crypto wallet draining kit that “lures visitors into signing requests”, the report added.
“Once the request is signed, the attacker will transfer NFTs and ERC-20 tokens out of the victim’s wallet,” Beosin’s researcher said.
Both Murati and OpenAI are yet to comment on how the Twitter account was breached.
