Only Rs 12.3 crore allotted for AIIMS-Madurai, Centre flayed – ET HealthWorld
MADURAI: An RTI reply has revealed that the Union government had released only 12.3 crore for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
The estimated cost of AIIMS project in Madurai is 1,978 crore, out of which 1,621 crore is to be covered by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) loan and balance through budgetary support. An RTI reply to activist R Pandiraj in 2022 said no funds had so far been released by JICA.
Speaking to TOI on Monday, Virudhunagar MP Manickam Tagore said, “The allocated sum is not for any construction activity but buying amenities and office expenditure for the temporary campus at Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital and construction of project cell office at Thoppur in Madurai. If the project goes on at this pace, the AIIMS is not going to come up any time during the BJP rule.”
Tweeting on the information, Madurai MP Su Venkatesan said if the same question had been asked in Parliament, the Union ministers would have “tagged us agents of private colleges”.
Inaganti Ravi Kumar, the activist who filed the plea, said the information proves that the Centre is biased in allocating funds for AIIMS in Madurai.
