Oakland Neighborhood Studio BK ROOTS Fitness Relocates to Piedmont Ave
No matter your age, the new trend in fitness is called LONGEVITY

The exercises that you did in your 20’s are probably not the exercises you want to be doing in your 30’s, 40’s and beyond. Why? Because most of our bodies have been stuck in a seated position for 10-20 more years than before; causing stiffness, muscle imbalances and joint pain.
Taking that bootcamp class with all the jumps is typically not going to feel so great if you don’t consistently stretch. This is not to say that you can’t do jumps in your 40’s or 50’s, but you DO need to have the strength and flexibility from strength training to support that impact. We must modify our workouts as we get older so that our bodies can continue to be supple, flexible and able to hold our own weight during movement (such as picking up moving boxes).
A local, neighborhood gym for 10 years in Oakland, BK ROOTS Fitness just relocated from Jack London Square to Piedmont Ave. BK ROOTS is a family-run personal training studio with small group classes that has served clientele ranging from artists, to architects, tech, law, finance and students.
In urban neighborhoods, adults in their 20’s and 30’s typically want to focus on their health, be in shape for their wedding, take prenatal pilates classes while pregnant, and lose weight after baby is born. People in their 40’s and 50’s tend to want overall health and energy to keep up with kids, work and life. Milestone birthdays make for great motivation to get into good shape. Clientele past 50 are often looking for less impact movements such as Pilates that work the core, flexibility and range of motion.
Gyms were much missed in the past year and a half. The community that a gym or studio supplies is like nowhere else. It’s a place we go to better ourselves, physically and mentally. The gym is where we go to de-stress, to renew, to strengthen, to shed. According to the Global Health and Fitness Association, 58% of fitness industry revenue dropped in 2020, 17% of studios and fitness clubs closed forever in the U.S and 5 major fitness companies filed for bankruptcy. Fitness in California has been closed for a long time. This tells us that even though the pandemic hit the fitness industry hard, it has also taught us that the human spirit’s desire for movement and connection is unbreakable.
At a gym or studio, community is what keeps us feeling connected. Music keeps us moving. Having health as a common goal is motivating. Feeling our physical strength is grounding. We crave a physical challenge. We crave the ability to move with agility. We are as old as we feel.
BK ROOTS Fitness focuses on core-based exercises through traditional strength training workouts that target the body’s ability to stabilize and to utilize the core for movement. There is now something for everyone in the neighborhoods of Piedmont and Temescal in Oakland, Ca.
No matter your age, the new trend in fitness is called LONGEVITY.
