The strike began on May 1 and while there have been discussions, there has been no solution.
The writers are concerned about the potential for AI to replace them in the future. They are demanding a number of protections against AI, including a ban on AI being used to write or rewrite literary material, and a ban on AI being used as source material for new works. Tensions have been running high and amidst that Netflix has put up a job posting, which is AI-related and pays quite a bit of money.
What’s the job posting?
The job role is of product manager, machine learning platform. As per the job listing, Netflix has said that machine learning is already helping innovation in all areas of the business. “From helping us buy and create great content, helping members choose the right title for them through personalisation, to optimising our payment processing and other revenue-focused initiatives,” Netflix said in the job posting. It is the “create great content” which is a big issue with writers who feel that they aren’t being paid enough already and now face the threat of being replaced by AI. How AI will be used is something that writers are overly concerned with. AI could be used to generate story ideas, write scripts and thus making their roles relatively less useful.
Netflix said that the role could earn compensation anywhere between $300,000 to $900,000.
