Musk: PM Modi to meet Tesla CEO Elon Musk in US – Times of India

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on his first state visit to the United States of America early this morning. The Indian Prime Minister is scheduled to have a host of meetings in the US and now ANI has reported that he will meet Tesla CEO Elon Musk as well.
Musk will be among the 24 people, which include economists, artists, scientists as well, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet. Among the big names, Modi is set to meet include astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and Grammy award-winning Indian-American singer Falu (Falguni Shah).
It is not clear what is on the agenda of the meeting. However, Musk has in the past hinted about bringing Tesla to India but certain issues do persist. Last year, India reportedly refused to agree to Tesla’s request to lower the import tax on cars, which can reach as much as 100%. India wants Tesla to build vehicles locally but the carmaker wanted to test the demand in the market first with imports.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal earlier this year, Musk said that the automaker would probably pick a location for a new factory by the end of this year. When asked whether India was an interesting place to set up a new factory, Musk said, “Absolutely”.
This won’t be the first time Modi meets Musk as on a visit to the US in 2015, he had visited the Tesla factory. It was reported then that Musk had given a tour of the factory to the Indian Prime Minister. Musk and Prime Minister Modi had discussed Tesla’s developments in battery technology, energy storage and renewable energy and the positive implications of this innovation for India..
