Suryakumar Yadav defied the high-flying bowling battery of Rajasthan Royals to help Mumbai Indians score a five-wicket victory at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday night.
Yadav played a crucial innings of 51 off 39 balls while his teammate Tilak Verma churned out 35 off 30. Things looked tight after the duo were dismissed in the 16th over as Royals bowlers dragged it to the last over where pacer Kuldeep Sen had to defend four runs. Royals’ hopes were raised after the youngster dismissed Kieron Pollard on the first delivery, but Daniel Sams sealed the match with a six over deep mid-wicket.

It is more like a consolation win, but Rohit Sharma & Co have finally managed to end their team’s losing streak after eight matches. Though the win would virtually make no difference to MI’s prospects, it would certainly spice up the playoff race where Royals too are a strong contender.

Chasing 159, it was a rocky start for Mumbai as they lost their openers, Rohit and Ishan Kishan, within the Powerplay. But the script soon changed as Yadav and Tilak Verma got going in their quest of the first win of the season.

Earlier, Jos Buttler seamlessly changed his style of functioning on the slow wicket. The flamboyant Rajasthan Royals opener responded first with patience, and then briefly with his trademark flair, to guide the team to 158/6 against the Mumbai Indians.

Buttler’s 52-ball 67 was a laborious knock — by his standards — that came to an end after some fireworks in the 16th over bowled by Hrithik Shokeen. The figures read 6,6,6,6,0, before the off-spinner came round the wicket. Then, an outside the off delivery saw him giving an easy catch at long-off.
