In an online scam, a 27-year-old doctor in Mumbai lost Rs 1.4 lakh after placing an order for 25 plates of samosas from a well-known eatery in the city’s Sion area. A police case has been filed but no suspects have been apprehended yet.

How the Mumbai doctor lost money in an online scam?

According to police, the victim, a doctor at KEM hospital, and his colleagues had made plans to have an outing at Karjat. As part of their preparations, they ordered samosas to enjoy during their journey. After finding the restaurant’s phone number online, he placed an order. When he made a phone call, the person who answered requested him to pay an advance of Rs 1,500.

Post that, the doctor received a message on Whatsapp. The message contained both the confirmation of the order and the bank account number to which the money should be sent online. The doctor sent a payment of Rs 1,500, as per a report by PTI.

The person on the other end mentioned that the doctor needed to generate a transaction ID for the payment. During the process of following the instructions, the doctor initially lost Rs 28,807. Unfortunately, the losses continued and eventually amounted to a cumulative loss of Rs 1.4 lakh.

As per the police officials, a case has been filed at Bhoiwada police station based on a complaint by the victim under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.
