More hosps offer palliative and medical care to elderly at home – ET HealthWorld
Kochi: To cater to the city’s aging population, more hospitals here are now trying to ensure that palliative care and medical help reaches home for elderly patients.
This is to reduce their dependence on hospitals. The initiative is expected to help parents whose children are working or studying outside Kerala. Aster volunteers on Thursday launched mobile medical services that’s equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to provide diagnostic and medical tests, as well as consultations and basic treatment.
The facility will be accessible even to people staying in the interiors.
“We are thrilled to launch the services in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, reaffirming our commitment to expanding healthcare access and making a positive impact in underprivileged communities. These advanced mobile units bring diagnostic tests, consultations, and essential treatments directly to remote villages, bridging the gap in healthcare accessibility,” said Aster DM Healthcare-India CEO Dr Nitish Shetty.
“…Our aim is to transform lives and ensure quality healthcare reaches everyone, regardless of their location or background,” Dr Shetty said.
Even Amrita hospital is making efforts to take treatment and palliative care to as many of their elderly patients at home.
Over the past 60 years, the percentage of people aged 60 and above in Kerala has shot up from 5 to 17 per cent — the highest proportion in any Indian state. This makes Kerala an outlier in a country with a rapidly growing population.
The social dynamics of Kerala is gravely changing with the majority of the younger population moving out of the state, leaving behind their elderly parents.
While parents are healthy, there are no issues. But the problem starts once one of the parents falls ill and needs frequent hospital visits.
“We are planning to go further and plan to set up pick up and drop facilities for elderly patients. Most of the children are willing to spend for their parents but they have no time to accompany them to the hospital. We are working on the modalities before we get into it,” said pulmonologist and medical superintendent of Rajagiri Hospital Dr Sunny P Orathel.
They already offer OP discounts to senior patients, besides providing senior desk help.
