Microsoft Edge is apparently sharing all the websites you have been browsing with Bing. However, it does not seem intentional, but a bug with Edge Collections, a content aggregation feature that serves recommendations for online creators you follow.
The issue was first discovered by a Reddit user who noticed that the latest version of Microsoft Edge sends a request with the full URL of almost every page visited to bingapis.com.
The Reddit user notes that while the “feature” is limited to some specific websites that support the content-follower feature, only sharing the URL if you are on a social media website, such as the likes of YouTube, Instagram, or Pinterest. But, with the Microsoft Edge build 112.0.1722.34, the Reddit user notes that the behaviour has changed, sharing information about every URL you visit in Edge to Bing.
According to Rafael Rivera, a developer who spoke to The Verge, the feature was designed to inform Bing only when the user visited specific sites they had chosen to follow. However, the feature is not working as it should be, sharing information about almost every domain visited with Bing.
In response to the allegations, Microsoft said it is “aware of reports” about the URL-leaking issue and that the company “will take appropriate action to address any issue.”However, Microsoft has not said what led to this behaviour.
It is recommended to turn off the creator-following feature until Microsoft comes up with a fix. To disable all the creator-following features in Edge, and then scroll down to Services. Next, toggle off the switch “Show suggestions to follow creators in Microsoft Edge.” Once this is done, the feature should be disabled. However, unlike many settings that can be synced across different devices when using a Microsoft account, this needs to be turned on manually on each computer you are using Edge on.
