Micron makes, ships DRAM technology with 1-Beta node to smartphone makers – Times of India

0
Micron Technology has announced that it has started shipping qualification samples of its 1β (1-beta) DRAM technology for select smartphone manufacturers and chipset partners. The company also announced that it has achieved mass production readiness with the world’s most advanced DRAM technology node.
The RAM uses Micron’s next-generation of process technology that is claimed to offer low-power draw and double data rate 5X (LPDDR5X), delivering top speed grades of 8.5 gigabits (Gb) per second, the company says. The node delivers gains across performance, bit density and power efficiency that will have sweeping market benefits.
“Beyond mobiles, 1β delivers the low-latency, low-power, high-performance DRAM to support highly-responsive applications, real-time services, personalisation and contextualisation of experiences, from intelligent vehicles to data centers,” the company explained.
The node is claimed to deliver around a 15% power efficiency improvement and more than a 35% bit density improvement1 with a 16Gb per die capacity over last year’s 1α (1-alpha) node.
This news comes months after Micron shipped the world’s first 232-layer NAND in July, designed to drive performance.
LPDDR5X RAM use case
The mobile ecosystem will be the first to reap the benefits of 1β DRAM’s significant gains. It will help in next-generation mobile innovation and advanced smartphone experiences while consuming less power. The 1β’s speed and density will also help in smooth downloads as well as responsive launches and simultaneous use of data-hungry 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
Additionally, 1β-based LPDDR5X will enhance smartphone camera launch, night mode and portrait mode with speed and clarity, enable shake-free, high-resolution 8K video recording and intuitive in-phone video editing.
