Meiyang Chang: I want to be part of stories that has a wider range

Actor, anchor, singer and a dentist, Meiyang Chang is truly content with his journey in the industry so far.

“I still consider my participation in Indian Idol as the turning point of my life. I seriously never had to look back once the show clicked with the audience. Then, I got this big break in Badmaash Company which gave me a footing in the films,” says the Undekhi 2, Sultan and Detect-ive Byomkesh Bakshy actor.

Chang adds, “I greatly feel that the industry as well as Mumbai as a city has accepted me with open arms. Otherwise, a qualified dentist who took a chance in the singing field became a known actor is a proof enough that I actually got to meet and work with some amazing people here without any prejudice. They not only helped me to become what I am but also stood by me.”

Adding further about his quest to become an actor, Chang says, “It was not easy to dabble into acting as it’s a creative art that takes your blood and sweat! But, after all these years, I’m in love with the craft and raring for more good roles. I am hopeful, in coming time, I will get to be part of stories that has wide range in terms of characteris-ation and not always take my ethnicity into focus.”

On his bittersweet experience in last two years of pandemic, he shares, “When Covid-19 broke it was a little strange experience for all of us. My social media blew up with mean texts but then there were well-wishers too. It was funny and ironic. I’m a third generation Indian-Chinese. Born and brought up in India, including my grandparents, we have completely integrated here and are a part of the country. I have learnt to take such things in my stride and steadily move on.”

Currently seen playing two different characters on web space, Chang have some interesting projects lined-up. “I am extremely thrilled that good projects are happening for me. My recently released web show Undekhi 2 saw me playing a completely out-of-the box role. The first season was well appreciated by the viewers, so I was all the more game to be a part of the second installment. Also, last month, OTT series 1962: The War in the Hills got released that gave me an opportunity to be part of the history. So, good work is happening.”
