Many ACs at Sambhajinagar GMCH lie defunct; patients & staff feel the heat – ET HealthWorld
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: More than a dozen air conditioners, including a few fitted in the intensive care unit and casualty section, have been lying defunct at the Government Medical College and Hospital, causing inconvenience to patients as well as healthcare workers.
Mohsin Ahmed, who is one of the civil society members of the governing panel at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), alleged that a lapse in security has led to the theft of some air conditioner (AC) machinery. “Besides the theft, some air conditioners are simply gathering dust to maintenance issues. This is gross negligence on the part of authorities. The patients and employees are made to suffer for no fault of theirs,” he said.
Ahmed also raised questions about the security system at the GMCH. “The GMCH claims to have CCTV surveillance. However, air conditioner machinery still got stolen,” he said.
When contacted, GMCH dean Dr Sanjay Rathod admitted that some of the air conditioners at the state-run facility were not working. “An inquiry committee will be constituted to investigate the AC theft. We will also lodge a police complaint based on the report of the inquiry panel,” he said.
Rathod said maintenance of ACs at the GMCH has been also ordered. “We will be officially inspecting the condition of all air conditioners and quick action will be ordered for necessary repairs,” he said.
Among different key sections, the blood bank of the GMCH was found to have smooth-functioning ACs. “Even if the air conditioners develop technical snags, we fix the issue at the earliest as the blood bank cannot function properly without the desired ambient temperature,” said an official of the blood bank.
Besides catering to the tertiary healthcare needs of scores of patients from eight districts of Marathwada, GMCH here also treats patients from Ahmednagar and Jalgaon among other neighbouring areas.
