Mammootty and Vijay Sethupathi pay tribute to Tamil actor Poo Ramu, call him ‘one of the finest artists’

Mammootty, Vijay Sethupathi, and Udhayanidhi Stalin among others paid tribute to the late Tamil actor Poo Ramu. He died on Monday after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. He was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi hospital in Chennai. Poo Ramu is known for playing supporting roles in films such as Karnan, Peranbu and Soorarai Pottru.

Taking to Twitter, Mammootty shared an old photo with Poo Ramu. He wrote, “Saddened to hear the demise of one of the finest artists in Tamil cinema #PooRamu. Heartfelt condolences to his family & dear ones & Thank you for being a part of #NanpakalNerathuMayakkam.” Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam is an upcoming Malayalam film directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery.

Sharing the news of his death, Vijay Sethupathi shared a tweet, “RIP Poo Ramu.” Actor Udhayanidhi Stalin visited Ramu at the hospital and paid his respects. He shared it in a Twitter post.

The translation of his tweet in Tamil read, “I paid my respects to my brother’s body at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital and expressed my condolences to late brother ‘Pooramu’, who was acclaimed for his excellent acting and excellent character selection in important films.”

Director Arun Matheswaran, who worked with Ramu in his debut film Rocky, took to Twitter to pay his condolences. Calling him a terrific performer, Arun wrote, “Saddened! Condolences to the family. A terrific performer, a good human.. you will be missed, sir. He played Rolex Mahalingam in Rocky.”

Mostly popular for playing character roles, it was the Tamil film Poo that gave Ramu his big recognition, and he was henceforth known as Poo Ramu. He was recently seen in Suriya-starrer Soorarai Pottru, in which he played his father.

Some of his other popular films include Nedunalvaadai, Kadhale Ennai Kadhali, Peranbu and Karnan among others. In most of the films he worked in, he ended up playing father or grandfather characters.
