Maharashtra Health department to start dedicated centres for pregnancy care – ET HealthWorld

Pune: Maharashtra state health department has selected 471 government facilities to start its SUMAN centres, which will focus on giving care to pregnant and post-partum care of women.

These facilities will focus on providing free, world-class, holistic health care for conception, pregnancy care and post-partum care to the mother and the child upto six months after delivery. This will ensure a healthier pregnancy and work in the benefit of reducing maternal mortality as well as bringing down infant mortality numbers.

Of the 471 Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan (SUMAN) scheme centres to be developed this year, 255 will focus on SUMAN basic, 157 on BEmONC (Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care) and 59 on CEmONC (Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care).

The 255 Basic SUMAN centres include primary healthcare centre’s (PHC). The 155 BEmONC centres will include the sub-district and rural hospitals and 59 healthcare centres.

Once the central government issues guidelines for the same, the selected health facilities will have to acquire certification, as per the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) and also upgrade their services and machinery according to the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS).

Dr Suraj Wani, Superintendent at Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Kamala Nehru Hospital (KNP), which is one of the 59 CEmONC centres to be upgraded said, “We already have a NICU for paediatric care and a gynaecology department at our hospital. However, we will now upgrade our facilities for pregnant women and also for post-partum care.”

Dr Aniruddha Deshpande, assistant director, maternal health, Public Health Department, said, “The intention of this program is to improve maternal as well as infant health. Maharashtra as a state is already leading as far as bringing down maternal and infant mortality numbers are concerned. This will help bring down the numbers even more.”
