Kidney failure, heatstroke cases up in hosps amid heat – ET HealthWorld
Patna: City hospitals have reported a rise in cases related to heatstroke, high fever and breathing problems with the mercury crossing above 40 degrees Celsius. Loss of water among kidney patients has also aggravated their problems and they too are being admitted for treatment in medical colleges and government hospitals, say doctors.
The OPDs at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) are witnessing a rush of patients with symptoms of heatstroke. “Patients down with heatstroke, high fever, skin and breathing problems are reaching in large numbers and some of them are even being admitted in the medicine ward,” PMCH principal Dr VP Choudhary said.
Dr M Sarfaraz, chief medical causalty officer in PMCH emergency unit, said the Tata ward was full to its capacity with patients admitted under medical emergency.
“Dehydration, high fever and gastrointestinal disorder are the main problems of heat affected patients,” he said.
Situation at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), a super specialty health facility, was not different. “The number of kidney failure patients has suddenly jumped by 10 percent mainly due to high temperature which caused imbalance in electrolytes and all such cases required immediate admission for thorough treatment,” said Dr Manish Mandal, medical superintendent, IGIMS.
He said people of all ages needed to keep their bodies fully hydrated in such hot weather to ward off chances of falling ill. Dehydration could lead to several ailments, he added.
At government hospital, Gardanibagh, deputy superintendent Dr Mithileshwar Kumar said patients of dehydration, diarrhoea and gastrointestinal disturbances were reaching in large number.
“The majority of patients are those who consumed roadside fast food or poorly maintained wedding feasts, leading to food poisoning,” he added.
