BENGALURU: Reece Topley’s tryst with freak injuries continued with the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s left-arm pacer dislocating his right shoulder while fielding against Mumbai Indians in the home team’s campaign opener.
At the M Chinnaswamy stadium on Sunday night, Topley, while attempting to cut a run off spinner Karn Sharma’s bowling in the eighth over, fell awkwardly on his right shoulder and was left writhing in pain. It was later confirmed that the 29-year-old had dislocated his shoulder.
Mike Hesson, RCB’s director of cricket operations, said: “Unfortunately, Topley’s knee dug into the ground and then he obviously landed on his shoulder and dislocated it. It was lucky enough that we were able to pop it back in.”

While Topley has travelled to Kolkata with the team for Thursday’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders, he is unlikely to take the field. He underwent a scan here on Sunday and RCB yet to reveal the extent of the injury.
This is a fresh blow for the England cricketer, whose career has been plagued by injuries. A series of stress fractures saw him in and out of the England team following his international debut in 2015. Last year, Topley was ruled out of the T20 World Cup on the eve of England’s warm-up match against Pakistan after sustaining a ligament injury in his left ankle.

Topley’s injury is another setback for RCB after their new recruit Will Jacks was ruled out of the competition due to injury. Also sidelined are their mainstay pacer Josh Hazlewood (Achilles) and emerging batter Rajat Patidar (heal) with no date set for their return.
