iPhone 15 to support 15W wireless charging on chargers other than MagSafe: Report

0

The iPhone 15 will reportedly continue with 15W wireless charging support but this time it will also be compatible with the new Qi2 wireless charging standard. Up until now, only Apple’s MagSafe technology supports 15W wireless charging and for normal wireless charging the power limit is 7.5W. This is set to change with the iPhone 15 series, according to a report by Charger Lab

What is Qi2 wireless charging standard?

For context, Qi2 is the new wireless charging standard and it’s a more upgraded version of Qi. Announced earlier this year by Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), Qi2 works the same way as MagSafe where it utilises the magnetic support for a more efficient and convenient wireless charging. Apple also worked closely with the consortium for Qi2. This results in better energy consumption as the phone sticks to the charger and receives the maximum power. Wireless charging, although convenient, is still very slow when it comes to speed so even a small bump adds to its benefits.

This essentially means that the iPhone 15 series will be compatible with Qi2-enabled wireless charging accessories. The Qi2 magnetic accessories are also said to be much cheaper as they could cost less than one-third of Apple’s MagSafe chargers. Apple currently sells MagSafe iPhone chargers, and cases starting at Rs 4,900.

This way, iPhone users will have the option to opt for alternative magnetic wireless chargers other than MagSafe. Also, Qi2 chargers are compatible with all iPhones that support wireless charging, and Android devices as well.
