NEW DELHI: India’s foreign wrestling coach, Georgian Temo Kasarashvili, was on Friday sacked by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) after none of the Greco-Roman grapplers secured the Olympic qualification for the upcoming Tokyo Games. While eight Indian men’s and women’s freestyle wrestlers have secured their berth for Tokyo, no Greco-Roman grappler has qualified for the multi-sport extravaganza, scheduled in Tokyo from July 23 to August 8.
In a statement, the SAI informed: “SAI has relieved foreign wrestling coach Temo Kasarashvili of his contract after no Indian Greco-Roman grappler secured Olympic Games qualification. The decision was taken following a recommendation from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). His contract with SAI was from February 2019 till the Olympics.”
At the recent World Olympic qualifiers in Sofia, Bulgaria, the country’s Greco-Roman grapplers had drawn a blank. Four of them – Anshu (67kg), Gurpreet Singh (77kg), Sunil Kumar (87kg) and Deepanshu (97kg) – had lost in the opening round, while Sachin Rana (60kg) was forced to pull out due to illness. Naveen Kumar (130kg) couldn’t take the mat after testing positive for Covid-19 ahead of his opening bout.
Temo had returned to Georgia after the nationwide lockdown was announced in India due to rising numbers of coronavirus cases last year in March. After spending four months in Tbilisi, he returned to India in August to join the national camp in Sonepat.
