India vs Sri Lanka, 3rd ODI: Sri Lanka mull moving Dasun Shanaka up the order | Cricket News – Times of India
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Dasun Shanaka has been a lone ranger for Sri Lanka on this India tour where the visiting team has been found wanting in all aspects of the game.
The 31-year-old Sri Lankan captain has been aggressive and innovative with the bat and has provided his team with vital breakthroughs with the ball. He was their top run-getter in the T20I series and followed it up with a brilliant century in a losing cause in the first ODI in Guwahati.
No wonder, the Sri Lankan team is contemplating a move to push Shanaka up the order. “Certainly, it is something that we have talked about. Could we get Dasun to bat at No.5? I think it is a fairly good argument and we have had a strong discussion,” Sri Lankan coach Chris Silverwood said in effusive praise of his team’s captain.
“The great thing I have enjoyed about Dasun so far is that he has led by example. From a batting perspective, he has played in a way that is selfless. He has taken risks at the right time and got the rewards for it. More importantly, he has played in a way that we want other guys to follow,” he added.
The 47-year-old Yorkshireman wants the Sri Lankan team to primarily improve in two areas. “Firstly, the top 6, we have had good starts. Some of the senior players should take the onus and take the score deep and put a challenging score for India to chase. In the bowling department, we see how India exploits the conditions and we have to try and replicate that. Obviously, that means we have to put the pressure on Indian batsmen constantly,” he said.
The coach also feels that despite the series loss in T20Is and the ODIs, the Indian tour has been a huge learning curve for his boys, especially the spinners whom he reckons will have a major part to play in the World Cup that will be held here later in the year.
“We have good spinners who will benefit from this experience when they come back for the World Cup. They will know what lengths they have to bowl, and what lines they have to hold. And they will be richer for it,” Silverwood said.
