Ginger Price Surge Forces Tea Stall Owners In Kolhapur To Opt For Cardamom

0

Soaring prices of vegetables have not only had an impact on the common man’s pocket but also on the taste of the food we consume. Wondering how? Well, the surge in ginger prices has forced many tea stall owners to increase the price of their cutting chai. As per a Times Of India report, the local tea vendors in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, have increased the price of ginger tea from Rs 5 to Rs 8. According to reports, ginger is being sold at Rs 155 per kg in the Kolhapur APMC, while it is priced at Rs 220 per kg in the retail market. Traders attribute the price hike to the short supply of ginger in the market.

As a result of the price increase, many tea sellers have been compelled to reduce their usage of ginger. One tea stall owner, Somnath Shintre, was quoted in the report as saying, “Due to the high prices, many of us had to either reduce the amount of ginger used, raise the price, or find alternative options. These days, I am using cardamom instead of ginger.” He also mentioned that the price of milk surged from Rs 45 to Rs 60 per litre in January. With the skyrocketing price of ginger, tea stall owners are forced to increase the price of tea and limit the servings to cutting chai.
It should be noted that the news about ginger comes weeks after the increase in tomato prices affected Indian kitchens. In July, a picture of a notice from McDonald’s started circulating on the internet. The notice stated that due to the significantly high tomato prices, the fast food chain would not be serving tomatoes in their burgers and wraps in certain parts of India. A Twitter user shared a picture of the notice with the caption, “McDonald’s, Delhi put up this notice! Even McDonald’s cannot afford tomatoes now.” Take a look:
