Fresh Air Weekend highlights some of the best interviews and reviews from past weeks, and new program elements specially paced for weekends. Our weekend show emphasizes interviews with writers, filmmakers, actors and musicians, and often includes excerpts from live in-studio concerts. This week:

‘Reservation Dogs’ co-creator says the show gives audiences permission to laugh: Sterlin Harjo says there’s a tendency to be “very precious with Native people … that’s kind of how the world is trained to view us.” The irreverent series follows four teens on a reservation.

‘Words & Music’ offers 15 demos Lou Reed recorded as a fledgling artist: Reed died in 2013. This new collection, which was recorded in May 1965, captures the earliest-known versions of what would become some of the Velvet Underground’s best known songs, including “Heroin” and “Pale Blue Eyes.”

‘Friday Night Lights’ author tackles a historic WWII football match-up: Buzz Bissinger revisits a football game among Marines that took place on a Pacific island in 1945, while they were waiting to engage in the assault on Okinawa. His new book is The Mosquito Bowl.
