Fortis organises training programme for oncology surgeons on advanced leprosy surgeryMumbai: Department of Surgical Oncology Fortis Hospital Mulund organised a training programme under the banner of Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgeons (IAGES) for oncology surgeons on advanced leprosy surgery, at Fortis Hospital and over 100 doctors had participated in it.

The aim of this programme was to train these 106 surgeons into learning minimal access surgery, in which one or two small incisions are made instead of a large one. This helped them develop their skills in laparoscopy and minimal access surgery in oncology. They received guidance from medical experts on this procedure who were from Spain, the US, and other neighbouring countries. Some major institutions too were part of this session, like, Tata Memorial Hospital, Indio American Cancer Hospital.

Commenting on the benefits of such surgery in oncology, Dr Anil Heroor, Director Advanced OncoSurgery Unit, Fortis Hospitals Mumbai said, “This training is most beneficial for the cancer surgeons who are not well versed with techniques of laparoscopy or minimal access surgery. They get to learn first-hand from the masters in the field. Such surgeries benefit the patients as there are small incisions which is known to reduce morbidity, pain post-surgery, the recovery is faster and if done with precision, the quality of surgery too is better.”

The surgeons not only got to learn in person from the from the experts, but they even got a practical training in regarding to using some of the advance equipment in form of the live surgical workshop.
