The FIFA World Cup 2022 is underway in Qatar, and a bunch of new tech has been involved in the game, from a sensor-embedded soccer ball, video assistant referees, and a semi-automated offside tech, all fueled by artificial intelligence. While all this improves the game going on the field, there is one more thing, the “Stadium Experience” within the FIFA+ app, that is meant to up the experience for attendees.
The FIFA+ app, introduced earlier this year, is the official one-stop app for world cup fans. The app offers at-home in-depth analysis and behind-the-scenes content throughout the tournament and beyond. It also has one “Stadium Experience” feature for those watching the game live at the stadium.
FIFA+ Stadium Experience shows an augmented reality view to live attendees
The Stadium Experience of the FIFA+ app adds up to the stadium experience, with a live augmented reality overlay, showing fans the player stats, heatmaps, and VAR replays as shown on television.
“The all-new viewing experience is designed specifically to complement and enhance how those in the ground celebrate and support,” notes the press release.

As seen in a video shared by a fan attending the match at the stadium, the user can point their phone at the pitch where the game is going. An overlay pops up, allowing them to view the stats of each player, their live speed, and passes completed, and all one needs to do is tap the player you want to keep track of.
Further, the app also shows users the scenes inside the FIFA war room when approached for Video Assistant Referee (VAR) heat map from different camera angles.
“FIFA will share the most modern insights, metrics and performance data in tournament history with the worldwide TV and online audience, together with the participating teams and their players,” says FIFA Chief of Global Football Development Arsène Wenger.
