Doctors at Rajindra hospital successfully remove skull-base tumour – ET HealthWorld
Patiala: A team of doctors at Patiala’s Government Rajindra Hospital has successfully operated upon a 45-year-old man to remove a 9×9 cm skull-base tumour.
The rare surgery was performed by ENT experts, including Prof Sanjeev Bhagat and assistant professor Dr Vishav Yadav.
The doctors revealed that the tumour was so large that it was occupying the left side of the patient’s face below the skull base and extending to the mouth and pushing the cheek out.
The patient had been suffering from cheek swelling for the last four months. Medical education and research and health minister Dr Balbir Singh congratulated the doctors for this rare feat.
Sharing the details, Prof Sanjeev Bhagat, head, ENT department, said this highly complex surgery took almost four hours to complete. The patient is recovering well and due for discharge soon. “The patient is expected to resume routine work in another 10 days,” he added.
“Earlier, such patients had to travel to PGI, Chandigarh, for treatment. But now, the team of ENT experts here is doing all kinds of complex ENT and skull-base surgeries,” said Professor Bhagat.
He also hailed the contribution of anaesthetists Prof Pramod Kumar, head, anaesthesia department, and Dr Gurjeet Gandhi. Dr H S Rekhi, medical superintendent, said: “Rajindra hospital is now well equipped to do such complex surgeries. Now, patients from all over Punjab are travelling to Rajindra hospital for all kinds of advanced surgeries related to ENT.”
Dr Rajan Singla, principal, Rajindra Medical College & Hospital, congratulated Prof Bhagat and Dr Yadav on accomplishing a difficult surgery. “We are in process to procure the advanced equipment to further upgrade the ENT department to the level of AIIMS and PGI,” said Dr Singla.
