Delhi: North East district least served by hospitals and nursing homes – ET HealthWorld

New Delhi : The private sector accounts for over half the hospital beds in Delhi, but about 46 per cent of those beds are in small hospitals with fewer than 50 beds each.

In contrast, 65 per cent of government beds are in tertiary-care hospitals with over 500 beds each and 31 per cent in large hospitals with 101 to 500 beds each. In comparison, just 9 per cent of private beds are in hospitals with more than 500 beds each and about 34 per cent in 101-500-bed hospitals.

Not surprisingly then, though there are only about 60 government hospitals in Delhi, they account for over 23,700 beds, not far behind the 26,405 beds that 1,011 private hospitals account for.

The geographical distribution of hospitals and beds is telling too. The peripheries of Delhi, especially North East and North districts, have the fewest hospital beds. North East is the worst off with no government hospital and just 18 private ones, of which only two have 50 or more beds, the rest being mostly nursing homes with less than 20 beds.

Similarly, of the seven government hospitals in North district, some are of pre-independence vintage and 56 per cent of government hospital beds in the district come from the Rajan Babu TB Hospital. Another 18 per cent (220 beds) are from the Infectious Diseases Hospital. Of the 46 private hospitals registered in this district, just three have 50 beds. The bulk of the remaining are nursing homes with less than 15 beds.

As Covid demonstrated, most small nursing homes are unable to provide anything beyond the most basic care and have no intensive care beds in case of any emergency.

An analysis of the list of registered hospitals in Delhi shows that West district has the highest concentration of private hospitals and hospital beds (over 5,300), followed by Central Delhi with more than 4,400 beds. When government and private beds are put together, Central Delhi has the highest concentration of beds, despite having just 136 hospitals, an indication of the presence of large hospitals in this area.

For this analysis, ESI hospitals have been counted as government hospitals as they cater to a large population of workers, but twohospitals each of the Army and the railways have been left out as these cater mainly to Army personnel and railway employees.

Delhi also has a handful of primary health centres and maternity homes run by the municipal bodies, which have a few inpatient beds, but detailed data on these was not available and would make only a minor difference to the bigger picture. Some of the postal districts with no hospitals or even nursing homes include Holambi Kalan (110082), Jharoda Kalan (110072), Karawal Nagar (110090) and Bijwasan (110061).
