Delhi: AIIMS brings hope for those with injuries in spinal cord

New Delhi: AIIMS has developed a technique to treat patients with spinal cord injuries. This can prevent the patients from suffering paralysis and help them in getting cured as well.

The technique uses magnetic nanoparticles suspended in a polymer system with sol-gel consistency that can be infused in the area of the spinal cord injury. The external magnetic stimulation may induce nerve regeneration in the injured area and reversal of paralysis, said doctors.

Experimental animal studies and cell culture studies have shown that it is safe for cells and tissues, they added.

Dr Suman Jain, department of physiology, collaborated with Dr Amit Dinda, department of pathology, and others to study and develop the new treatment method.

“The spinal cord injury is a very serious health problem with a high morbidity and mortality. There is no specific management that can cure the injury and reverse the paralysis,” Dr Dinda said.

The process for application of such a system in animal models was started around 2005. In between, the trials were affected owing to the pandemic period. However, the trials, which were being conducted on animals, got completed recently.

Dr Suman Jain said that “our paper on this has been published and we have also got a financial grant from the department of biotechnology to initiate the process for a limited clinical trial on spinal cord injury patients at AIIMS. We will be administering it on patients with severe spinal cord injuries. If the limited clinical trial is successful, then after about three more years, we will be implementing this intervention for management of spinal cord injuries.”

“There is no management for spinal cord injuries. This gel will be administered at the site of the injury in the body where it can regenerate and reconnect again. This gel will help to prevent further damage and save patients from facing paralysis. This is going to be a game changer in the medical world. We are in the process of filing a patent soon,” stated Dr Dinda.
