Cosmetic tattooing: A guide to permanent make-up

Sutherland MacDonald, said to be one of the greatest artists in the history of tattooing, is credited with the first application of permanent cosmetics at his London parlour in 1902. He became well known for tattooing an “all round delicate pink complexion” on the cheeks.

These days, permanent make-up has not only improved in quality, it also has multiple applications. One of the most popular uses at the moment simulates hair strokes, resulting in brows that look thicker and more defined, a plus if you’re not naturally blessed with brows like those of Kaia Gerber.

Also growing in popularity is lip blushing, which enhances the colour, shape, fullness and symmetry of lips. Meanwhile, “eyeliner” tattooed along the lash line is a great make-up alternative. (Note: if you are addicted to lash extensions, your lashes will need to be naked for the tattoo procedure.)

Eyebrow tattooing (from $995), also known as microblading and misting, works by having pigment placed under the skin with a fine blade, mimicking the strokes of brow hair. The process takes about two hours and is repeated eight weeks later.

For lip blushing (from $1495), the latest trend involves subtly tattooing the lips to create a soft hue. The best results are achieved by working close to the surface of the skin.

The lips are sensitive, so this treatment can be a bit on the ouchy side. The upside is you just add a clear gloss or balm such as Lucas’ Papaw Ointment for beautiful lips every day.

For the eyeliner procedure (from $895), a finely etched line that sits right on the lash line creates a clean crisp finish. The eyes are closed throughout the process and an anaesthetic balm is applied with a micro-tip to numb the area. You can also opt for lower lash application. Set aside two hours, with a top-up four weeks later.

Despite its name, permanent make-up does usually fade, slowly. It can last up to four years but if not refreshed can disappear completely. Top-ups are recommended every 18 months to two years to maintain pigment intensity.
