CONCACAF suspends four players after USA-Mexico brawl | Football News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: In the aftermath of the intense Champions League clash between the United States and Mexico, CONCACAF has issued suspensions to Weston McKennie and Sergino Dest from the United States, as well as Cesar Montes and Gerardo Arteaga from Mexico.
During the semifinal match, which saw both teams finishing with nine players, Montes received a red card for a reckless and unsightly kick aimed at Folarin Balogun. McKennie was dismissed for his involvement in the ensuing altercation.
Another major altercation resulted in the dismissals of Arteaga and Dest from the match.
CONCACAF, the governing body for football in North and Central America and the Caribbean, announced on Friday that McKennie and Montes would face an additional three-match suspension, in addition to their automatic one-match bans. Dest and Arteaga received an additional two-game suspension.
While Dest and McKennie are not part of the US squad for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup, these sanctions will negatively impact Mexico in the tournament, as both Montes and Arteaga are included in their Gold Cup squad.
CONCACAF also mentioned that both teams have been fined an undisclosed amount. However, there was no explicit reference to the homophobic chants by Mexican supporters that led referee Ivan Barton from El Salvador to halt the match in the final minutes.
In a statement following the game, CONCACAF expressed strong condemnation for what it referred to as “discriminatory chanting.” Over the years, Mexico has faced multiple fines totaling over $650,000 due to such chants by their fans. Additionally, they were compelled to play a match against Jamaica in September 2021 without any spectators.
