chrome: Google experiments with Chrome’s New Tab page design for Android – Times of India

0
Google rarely introduces major changes to its Chrome browser as it has a huge user base. The tech giant has been experimenting with various New Tab Page designs for its browser on Android devices. According to a report by 9to5Google, the latest change shows that the Chrome browser will be adopting a carousel that will list the websites that were recently visited by the user. Currently, the Google Chrome New Tab Page on Android includes — the company’s logo, Omnibox for search — an URL entry and shortcuts for recently visited sites. The most visited sites have their icons arranged below the search bar in a 4 x 2 grid. However, this design for the Chrome browser on Android is now expected to change.
What will the new design look like?
The report mentions that the tech giant is testing a new carousel design that will include up to 12 sites and their icons. However, users will be able to see only four or five of them at once instead of being able to see eight. Users have to scroll and tap on the icons to visit the page as opposed to being able to select an option without scrolling (as it is now available to most users). The shorter size of the site icon section will help other sections like the Discover and Following/RSS feed will benefit marginally.
Availability of this new design
The new carousel on Google Chrome’s New Tab Page is currently not available for all users. However, the report suggests that this new design is appearing on more devices that have updated their Chrome browsers to Chrome 102 stable version.
Other changes to Chrome’s New Tab Page
This new design was first introduced in a previous Chrome redesign attempt that improved the New Tab Page. Apart from the carousel of the recently visited site, the previous design also added another carousel for “Continue browsing” that showed the open tabs and replaced the Tab Grid. However, this design was never released widely but it was significant for breaking Chrome’s navigation model and also helped in elevating the New Tab Page over the tab switcher.
