Brain op in city hosp saves two-month-old – ET HealthWorld
Kolkata: A two-month-old boy, one of a pair of twins, underwent a complex, life-saving brain surgery at a private hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday.
Diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition triggered by the collection of cerebro-spinal fluid in the cavities within the brain, the pre-term baby had an enlarged head, and his condition was deteriorating fast. A team of five surgeons and doctors at Ruby General Hospital, led by neuro-surgeon Prasanna AV, drained the fluid from the child’s brain in an hour-long surgery. The baby is now stable and out of danger, said hospital sources.
The surgery was challenging since the boy was underweight and weak, according to neurosurgeon Prasanna. “Fluid had been collecting in his brain, making it swell and the baby had developed multiple complications. He was not being able to feed properly. Surgery was the only way to save his life. It was successful and the baby has shown an improvement in his normal physical activities,” said Prasanna.
A tube has been placed inside the brain, which is now draining the cerebro-spinal fluid into his abdomen. “It will be normally absorbed by the body and will no longer collect inside the brain,” Prasanna added.
The surgical team included Subhajit Guha, Sadanand Reddy, Sana Shaikh and Abhishek Pal, apart from Prasanna.
