Bihar govt puts hospitals on alert against XBB variant of Covid – ET HealthWorld
Patna: The state health department has put all the civil surgeons and heads of medical college and hospitals on alert, keeping Chhath festival in mind during which lakhs of people will come to the state to participate in the festival. It has cautioned that Covid-19 cases could rise during winter and the festive season, citing new variant like Omicron XBB.
The health department has also instructed the officials concerned to ensure that Covid-19 protocols are followed in public places to prevent a further spike in the number of cases, as other states like Maharashtra, West Bengal and Kerala have witnessed an increase in the cases recently.
“Even earlier, we had seen that Bihar had registered an increase in the Covid-19 cases after other states witnessed a surge. Hence, we are cautious, especially because of Chhath, as a large number of people will come from outside and gathering is expected,” said an official of the health department.
Instructions have been given to Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) to once again start the genome sequencing of the virus, in order to know the variant which is dominant here. “All the civil surgeons have been advised to remain on alert mode, which means keeping beds reserved, along with availability of medicines and oxygen,” said Pratyaya Amrit, additional chief secretary, state health department.
He said that instructions had been given to ramp up the testing and also check the functioning of oxygen plants. He also urged citizens to adhere to Covid-19-appropriate behaviour during the upcoming festival.
