0

Indian cuisine never fails to fascinate us with its diversity and uniqueness. Every region has something new to offer, enriching the food map of India. But what makes it even more special are the different regional and sub-regional variations of a single recipe. Take roti, for instance. A staple for most of us, roti in India is prepared using different types of flours and various cooking processes. While wheat flour (atta) is most commonly used for roti, you will also find makki (corn flour) being used in Punjab, bajra in Rajasthan, ragi in the southern regions, and the list goes on. Another such version is besan roti, a staple from Haryana.

About Besan Roti: What Makes This Roti From Haryana So Special:

If you visit any household in Haryana, you would find besan roti being widely consumed for breakfast or lunch. It is considered a substitute for regular atta roti that makes for a meal by itself when paired with achar and dahi. But what adds to the credibility is its rich nutrient profile. Besan in the dish makes it gluten-free, low in carbohydrates and contains a good amount of protein, fibre, and antioxidants. Let’s look into the major health benefits of besan roti:
– The fibre makes the roti fulfilling, which further curbs appetite, making it ideal to add to your weight loss diet.
– Protein in besan makes the dish good for muscle repair and overall nourishment.
– Besan roti can also aid digestion and promote gut health.
– The dish is low in carbs and can easily be consumed by people suffering from high blood pressure.
– It may also make for a diabetes-friendly dish due to the low glycemic index.

How To Make Haryana-Style Besan Roti At Home | Besan Masala Roti Recipe:

Now that you know all about its benefits, let’s show you how to make besan roti at home. Here, we bring you a recipe shared by Chef Anahita Dhondy on her Instagram handle that includes some masala for added flavours.
To make the dish, she prepared dough using besan, some atta, onion, green chilli, red chilli, salt, and some basic kitchen spices. “The dough should be firm but also soft and pliable,” she suggests. Once the dough is prepared, cover it with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 15 minutes. Next, cut small portions from the dough and roll it flat. Then, heat a tawa and prepare the roti with some ghee. That’s it.
