NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to review its existing policy regarding the participation of retired players in overseas T20 leagues during its upcoming Apex Council meeting on July 7.
Under the current policy, a BCCI registered player is allowed to compete in overseas T20 leagues only after retiring from international cricket and domestic cricket, including the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The decision to review the policy comes as Ambati Rayudu, who recently retired from the IPL after playing a significant role in the Chennai Super Kings’ title-winning campaign, is set to participate in the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States in July, representing the Texas Super Kings.

The objective behind this potential policy change is to safeguard the standard of domestic cricket and prevent any potential erosion caused by the proliferation of T20 franchise cricket, which may result in premature retirements among players.
The BCCI has been committed to protecting its active players from participating in T20 leagues abroad, and now it aims to introduce a clause regarding the involvement of retired players in such tournaments.
The agenda for the upcoming Apex Council meeting includes a discussion on the “policy for retired players for participation in overseas” leagues. The BCCI will deliberate on the matter to ensure a comprehensive and well-considered approach to the involvement of retired players in overseas T20 competitions.

BCCI to send teams for Asian Games
The BCCI has made the decision to send teams for the upcoming Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Hangzhou from September to October. While the men’s competition will coincide with India’s World Cup preparations, a second-string side is expected to represent the country in the continental event.
Speculation is rife that Shikhar Dhawan might lead the India B team in the Asian Games, showcasing his experience and leadership skills in the quadrennial extravaganza.
On the other hand, the women’s team will be participating in full strength and is considered to be the favourites for clinching the gold medal.
Cricket was last included in the Asian Games in the 2014 edition held in Incheon, but Indian teams did not participate in that competition.

Apart from the participation in the Asian Games, the BCCI’s top brass will also discuss the roadmap for upgrading stadiums for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India. The tournament, organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC), will be hosted across 10 venues, most of which are in need of renovation and refurbishment.
Furthermore, the board will address the absence of a broadcaster for the home season and the premature exit of BYJU’s as the jersey sponsor. These pressing matters will be deliberated upon during the meeting.
It’s worth noting that the men’s team had played the World Test Championship final against Australia earlier this month without a sponsor’s logo on their shirts.
In addition, the playing conditions for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy will be finalised during the meeting, with a specific focus on the “Impact Player Rule.”
The BCCI’s Apex Council meeting promises to be a crucial gathering where key decisions will be made to shape the future of Indian cricket in both domestic and international arenas.
