CHENNAI: Virat Kohli’s dream of leading the Indian team to a series win in South Africa and celebrating it with his 100th Test at Cape Town won’t happen after all.
The 98-Test veteran was ruled out of the second Test at the Wanderers in Johannesburg after complaining of upper back spams a day after the coach of the Indian team Rahul Dravid had said that the captain was giving his best to get back to his high-scoring form.
There were even pictures posted by BCCI of Kohli batting at the nets which indicated that the Indian captain didn’t feel any discomfort till Sunday. But come Monday, it came as a shock when he didn’t come out for toss and stand-in captain KL Rahul informed that he felt the pain on the morning of the game.
A BCCI release stated that the medical team will monitor his fitness along the course of the series. Kohli, normally a supremely fit cricketer, has, of late suffered from the odd niggle, but he hasn’t missed a game of this magnitude due to an injury.
It can be noted that Sachin Tendulkar, in the second half of his career, started suffering from back spasms and consequently missed quite a bit of cricket leading up to the 1999 World Cup in England. Tendulkar’s century against Pakistan with back spasms in Chennai in early 1999, though is stuff of legends and he played the next two Tests of the series with a padding on his back.
Kohli, now 34, is in the second phase of his career, and it will be interesting to see when can he be back playing for India again. He has gone through difficult times of late, quitting T20 captaincy and stripped off ODI leadership and the consequent run-ins with the BCCI administration.
